I had to take Henry to the hospital yesterday :(
He has been complaining that his knee hurt ever since he fell down and skinned his knee about a month ago. I just assumed he meant the scrape, and he only complained when he was upset about something else, so I never really paid much attention to it. He was still running around like a maniac and playing all day long and dancing and jumping, so I didn't think anything was REALLY wrong. But yesterday he woke up limping, and I knew I had to get everything checked out :(
After a few calls to different pediatric orthopedists in the area, I realized I wasn't getting him in at any of those offices for at least a week, so I decided to take him to Winthrop ER because they have a good pediatric department. Maureen offered to take Charlotte, so Henry and I headed over there...he was so upset when he realized we were at the "dockie", and he just kept saying through tears, "I wanna go home, wanna go Henry's house". Poor thing. He cried the entire time I was filling out the forms, all through the intake, when they attempted to weigh him, etc etc. They had to take his temp rectally, and he screamed through that...he told me later he didn't like the needle in his heinie :(
So....they finally got us checked in and into a room, where we proceeded to wait...and wait....and wait.
So sad...both of us (and clearly, mommy had no time for make-up)
But luckily, each bed had its own tv, so Henry was able to watch NickJr...what a life saver!!!
Isn't this the saddest look you've ever seen?!
We finally went in for the x-rays...he was surprisingly good. He was very nervous, but I told him it was just a camera and he just had to say cheese. With some maneuvering on my part, I was able to keep him still enough for them to get the shots, thank goodness. Afterwards, mommy rewarded Henry with a ring pop...parenting at its finest :)
Of course he JUST fell asleep when they came in and decided they wanted to do blood work. It was way past his nap time, and it was a traumatic day...he was OUT like a light. He didn't even wake up when I sat him up and started to undress him. If only he could've slept through the IV/bloodwork :(
The IV itself was less traumatic that I thought...the nurse was amazing, she was holding him, playing with him. Then she put him in the bed and told him she was going to give him a ride up and down...little did he know that when he got up they would give him the IV :(. There were 3 of us holding him down, 2 nurses and me...and then the one doing the IV. He cried and was upset, but he was okay in a few minutes...he didn't like that they put the splint and sock contraption on his arm though.
Finally, after a very long time, he fell back asleep. It was about 3:30pm at this point, he had only napped for about 15 min, and he was exhausted. And of course, that's when they came in to take his IV out. He slept through the first part haha.
Thankfully, the x-rays didn't show that anything was broken, and his blood work all came back normal...they said it was most likely a sprain or contusion, and just suggested we watch it. They acknowledged that its impossible to keep an almost 3 year old boy still to rest it, so said we should just follow-up with our doctor if we thought it wasn't getting better. So after 6 hrs in the hospital, we were told to "watch him" haha. Very grateful it wasn't anything serious, but we were both emotionally spent after that day.
So, wonderful parenting move #2, I told Henry I would take him to the toy store to pick out anything he wanted :). Here is is wandering the aisles...
And just to really spoil him, I took him to get ice cream after the toy store. He doesn't look happy here, but he enjoyed it...don't let his frown fool you!
Oh, and being the sweet kid he is, even though Charlotte was at the movies and having a grand old time while we were at the hospital, Henry insisted on getting her a present and ice cream as well :)
So, that was our eventful (and exhausting) day! Beyond thankful that there is nothing seriously wrong with his knee, and hoping he makes a quick recovery!!!
Xoxoxo
